Hello
This is Piknik.
Piknik is Electric Blue.
Piknik is Electric Blue.
Piknik Works is an architecture practice based in Istanbul and Vienna, working across multiple scales and typologies, from buildings to interiors.
The studio adopts a multi-directional approach, engaging with different disciplines and mediums to produce precise and carefully considered design.
Piknik draws from both contemporary culture and accumulated architectural knowledge, operating between the contemprary and the timeless qualities of spatiality.
Piknik aims at spaciousness as a core value; engages with everyday life through concise details, while employing both the narrative and atmospheric capacities of space.
Piknik does not draw a strict boundary between art and architecture, but rather works through their interrelations. Architecture is understood as a performative act, continuously nourished by research and ongoing exploration.
For Piknik, speculation and experimentality is the power behind realisation of truely good ideas.
Piknik’s work has been exhibited internationally and recognized with national and international awards. Projects have been realized in cities including Istanbul, İzmir, Ankara, Paris, Milan, Dubai, and Vienna.

The facade’s solid–void composition directly reflects the plan logic while adapting to orientation: a more fragmented and controlled pattern on the south responds to intense sunlight and the complex urban context, while the north opens up with larger, more regular apertures toward the Bosphorus view. Materially, a palette of reinforced concrete, fire brick, steel profiles, and natural wood enhances tactile richness, while a ventilated cavity behind the brick façade improves thermal performance and allows the building envelope to breathe.

The project extends beyond architecture into the creation of the brand’s spatial language, visual communication, and narrative-driven elements. Inspired by Anatolian mythology, concepts related to food, pleasure, and nourishment are translated into symbols, later materialized as 60 ceramic sculptures hand-crafted by ceramic artist Bilge Sayarlıoğlu and produced in Turkey. The outdoor structure, placed at the frontage, establishes a delicate balance with its surroundings while extending the identity of the venue into the public realm.

This approach integrates an open stage within a semi-open setting, expands restaurant capacity through the activation of transitional spaces, and reinforces the vibrancy of the outdoor public realm. The added spaces are articulated to resonate with the existing identity while introducing a new layer of spatial liveliness. A 12-meter red sculptural element anchors the center of the site, establishing a new iconic focal point. Complementing this, Piknik Works’ signature ground graphic system organizes and clarifies the complex spatial relationships across the 1,000 m² surface, enhancing both legibility and the overall spatial experience.

The atmosphere of the space is shaped in relation to the brand’s strong and innovation-driven identity. Robots, screens, and display elements contribute to a laboratory-like setting, while stainless steel units are combined with natural references such as rock-like forms to create a hybrid spatial language. Exposed infrastructure, restrained material pallette, and a carefully considered lighting strategy complete this language, resulting in a distinctive spatial identity.

At the center of the space, the “Mountain” acts as a super-furniture element—simultaneously functioning as an amphitheater, stage, seating unit, and event platform—forming a constantly transforming focal point. The project proposes an experimental and flexible workspace responsive to evolving work cultures. This approach has continued across a series of educational and production studios of varying scales developed with Hypers, evolving into a long-term collaboration exploring the relationship between space, user, and identity.

Titled “More Than I Want To Know About I,” the experience was structured around a series of questions posed by Piknik, inviting participants to respond through drawings on digital tablets. These individual contributions collectively formed a narrative reflecting everyday life in the 21st century. The resulting work captured the diversity and creativity of its participants, while embedding a subtle layer of critique—posing reflective and slightly ironic questions about digital communication, the contemporary information regime, and their effects on social and individual life.

Double-height voids introduced across two levels of the four-story structure bring spatial continuity and openness to the shared working areas. The identity of the space is developed in relation to a pool-products brand, culminating in an iconic blue meeting room that evokes an underwater atmosphere and acts as a defining focal point of the project.

Buildings with varying material expressions are organized around a central entrance courtyard, which acts as the primary point of orientation. From this core, a network of paths connects accommodation units, residencies, ateliers, event spaces, and production studios. The low-rise and dispersed spatial configuration allows the campus to integrate with its natural context, minimizing intervention by preserving existing trees and respecting the surrounding habitat. This distributed system supports a flexible and evolving use of space, while enabling a wide range of outdoor activities—from nature walks and sports to creative production.

In the semi-basement space, lighting has been reimagined: polycarbonate panels with integrated illumination have transformed the limited side façades into luminous surfaces, bringing depth and brightness to the interior. The central area has been transformed into an active field—stepped seating, a kitchen-bar, a curtained meeting volume, and movable tables have enabled a constantly shifting environment that supports production, interaction, and everyday life.

The project aims to make the everyday processes of production and the design approach visible. Models, tools, sketches, meetings, and the daily practices of the Piknik team are exposed toward the street, transforming the studio into a museum-like inventory and a public display. Walls and ceilings are articulated through a wooden grid system that reflects Piknik’s interplay of order and chaos, while providing a flexible and systematic framework for storage and display. A part of the Piknik Works team actively worked in this space for two years; today, the studio is being reconfigured to host new exhibitions and public production processes.

The first iteration, Performative Drawing #1 – Swedish Chapel in Istanbul, took place within a hidden chapel inside the Swedish Consulate, near the dense urban flow of İstiklal Avenue. Over a continuous 72-hour period, the artists lived inside the space and covered all interior surfaces through uninterrupted drawing. Produced without prior planning, the work unfolded as a contemporary fresco—layering references from cave paintings to art history, alongside fragments of contemporary culture shaped by digital life, social media, and technological transformation. The process itself became as significant as the result, turning drawing into a durational, bodily, and spatial performance.
