Info
Hello. This is Piknik.
Piknik is Electric Blue.

Piknik Works is an architecture practice based in Istanbul and Vienna, working across multiple scales and typologies, from buildings to interiors.

The studio adopts a multi-directional approach, engaging with different disciplines and mediums to produce precise and carefully considered design.

Piknik draws from both contemporary culture and accumulated architectural knowledge, operating between the contemprary and the timeless qualities of spatiality.

Piknik aims at spaciousness as a core value; engages with everyday life through concise details, while employing both the narrative and atmospheric capacities of space.

Piknik does not draw a strict boundary between art and architecture, but rather works through their interrelations. Architecture is understood as a performative act, continuously nourished by research and ongoing exploration.

For Piknik, speculation and experimentality is the power behind realisation of truely good ideas.

Piknik’s work has been exhibited internationally and recognized with national and international awards. Projects have been realized in cities including Istanbul, İzmir, Ankara, Paris, Milan, Dubai, and Vienna.

Kemal Bey Apartment is reimagined within the scope of urban transformation, establishing a refined relationship between residential and commercial spaces, the active street fabric, and the sloped site while foregrounding everyday life. The reconfigured floor plans reclaim corridor spaces for living areas and integrate compact home-office niches within underutilized corners.

The facade’s solid–void composition directly reflects the plan logic while adapting to orientation: a more fragmented and controlled pattern on the south responds to intense sunlight and the complex urban context, while the north opens up with larger, more regular apertures toward the Bosphorus view. Materially, a palette of reinforced concrete, fire brick, steel profiles, and natural wood enhances tactile richness, while a ventilated cavity behind the brick façade improves thermal performance and allows the building envelope to breathe.

Kübey Tapas Bar is located in Vienna within a historic building, along with its adjacent outdoor dining areas. The project develops a holistic spatial and graphic identity, exploring the coexistence of a newly constructed brand language within a historical context. Dining areas, bar and kitchen spaces, and outdoor seating are designed as a cohesive system—warm, legible, and oriented toward a communal experience. Interventions within the existing structure include the removal of suspended ceilings to reveal and exhibit original frescoes, contributing to the spatial identity and reinforcing the dialogue between past and present.

The project extends beyond architecture into the creation of the brand’s spatial language, visual communication, and narrative-driven elements. Inspired by Anatolian mythology, concepts related to food, pleasure, and nourishment are translated into symbols, later materialized as 60 ceramic sculptures hand-crafted by ceramic artist Bilge Sayarlıoğlu and produced in Turkey. The outdoor structure, placed at the frontage, establishes a delicate balance with its surroundings while extending the identity of the venue into the public realm.

DasDas Avlu is a comprehensive spatial transformation project that redefines the identity and use of DasDas Ataşehir through a series of architectural and programmatic interventions. The project includes a new facade, restaurants and cafés, an open-air stage, foyer spaces, and the renovation of existing venues—aiming to strengthen both the visibility and cultural identity of the space. Constructed with a lightweight steel structure and polycarbonate panels, the facade re-establishes the venue’s presence while enabling seasonal adaptability.

This approach integrates an open stage within a semi-open setting, expands restaurant capacity through the activation of transitional spaces, and reinforces the vibrancy of the outdoor public realm. The added spaces are articulated to resonate with the existing identity while introducing a new layer of spatial liveliness. A 12-meter red sculptural element anchors the center of the site, establishing a new iconic focal point. Complementing this, Piknik Works’ signature ground graphic system organizes and clarifies the complex spatial relationships across the 1,000 m² surface, enhancing both legibility and the overall spatial experience.

The project proposes a holistic design approach that aligns the identity of a fashion brand with its first retail space, located within historical building 'Paket Postanesi'. The space is conceived to accommodate both product display and sales, as well as workshops and event-based experiences. The absence of a dedicated storage area is transformed into an advantage, with display elements designed to integrate storage functions—turning the user experience into a playful and interactive system.

The atmosphere of the space is shaped in relation to the brand’s strong and innovation-driven identity. Robots, screens, and display elements contribute to a laboratory-like setting, while stainless steel units are combined with natural references such as rock-like forms to create a hybrid spatial language. Exposed infrastructure, restrained material pallette, and a carefully considered lighting strategy complete this language, resulting in a distinctive spatial identity.

A series of five visual pieces commissioned for the iconic Karaköy Güllüoğlu Baklava Restaurant in Istanbul. The works celebrate the cultural heritage of baklava while reflecting the brand’s historical journey and identity. The series reinterprets traditional visual narratives through contemporary techniques, ranging from a modernized miniature depicting fictive scenes of baklava production in Ottoman kitchens, to a large-scale Karaköy city silhouette enriched with embedded stories referencing the district’s landmarks and the brand’s legacy. Another key piece is the “Baklava Table,” where different varieties of baklava are illustrated within a composition inspired by the periodic table—highlighting both the diversity of flavors and the precision behind their making. Together, the artworks construct a narrative layer that connects history, craft, and place, extending the identity of the brand into the spatial experience.

The long-term collaboration between Piknik Works and Hypers has enabled the development of a strong and iconic spatial language aligned with the brand’s identity, spanning projects such as offices, academies, and production studios. The Hypers New Media projects originated in 2020, during a period when the boundaries between home and office rapidly blurred due to the pandemic, with a commission to design an office that adapts to new living conditions and “lives like a home.” Designed within an approximately 500 m² space, the office offers a hybrid spatial experience where references to domestic and work environments overlap, boundaries dissolve, and multiple use scenarios coexist. Curtains, plants, furniture, and floor graphics intertwine defined and undefined spaces.

At the center of the space, the “Mountain” acts as a super-furniture element—simultaneously functioning as an amphitheater, stage, seating unit, and event platform—forming a constantly transforming focal point. The project proposes an experimental and flexible workspace responsive to evolving work cultures. This approach has continued across a series of educational and production studios of varying scales developed with Hypers, evolving into a long-term collaboration exploring the relationship between space, user, and identity.

Piknik designed an immersive and interactive digital drawing event for the opening of Apple’s Istanbul Flagship Store in Bağdat Caddesi. The event space was transformed through Piknik’s signature ground graphic system, introducing a spatial layer that guided interaction and reinforced the immersive character of the experience. As the first artist group to collaborate with Apple Store in Turkey, the project introduced a performance-like format to the event.

Titled “More Than I Want To Know About I,” the experience was structured around a series of questions posed by Piknik, inviting participants to respond through drawings on digital tablets. These individual contributions collectively formed a narrative reflecting everyday life in the 21st century. The resulting work captured the diversity and creativity of its participants, while embedding a subtle layer of critique—posing reflective and slightly ironic questions about digital communication, the contemporary information regime, and their effects on social and individual life.

The project reinterprets an existing linear building through a systematic layout, organizing shared spaces at the center while positioning private work areas, meeting rooms, and executive offices along both edges. The design approach aims to achieve a fast and economical transformation through minimal intervention. Within this framework, a cohesive spatial atmosphere is established through a restrained material palette and carefully selected furnishings.

Double-height voids introduced across two levels of the four-story structure bring spatial continuity and openness to the shared working areas. The identity of the space is developed in relation to a pool-products brand, culminating in an iconic blue meeting room that evokes an underwater atmosphere and acts as a defining focal point of the project.

Piknik collaborated with Google for the “Deconstructor of Fun” event at Zorlu Center, creating an illustrative animation for the opening show that reimagined Istanbul through Google’s visual language. The animation brought together buildings, streets, characters, landmarks, and event speakers within a dynamic, game-like composition. Rather than a static representation, the city unfolded as a playful and layered narrative, where familiar elements were reinterpreted through motion and illustration. Serving as the opening moment of the event, the work set the tone for the experience—blending storytelling, playfulness, and visual clarity into a cohesive introduction.

The project encompasses the masterplanning and architectural design of the S.E.C.A. South Campus, bringing together educational facilities and inspiring everyday life within a cohesive spatial framework. Spanning 10 hectares, the campus integrates accommodation, educational spaces, production studios, event venues, communal kitchens, meeting halls, and restaurants across both built and open environments.

Buildings with varying material expressions are organized around a central entrance courtyard, which acts as the primary point of orientation. From this core, a network of paths connects accommodation units, residencies, ateliers, event spaces, and production studios. The low-rise and dispersed spatial configuration allows the campus to integrate with its natural context, minimizing intervention by preserving existing trees and respecting the surrounding habitat. This distributed system supports a flexible and evolving use of space, while enabling a wide range of outdoor activities—from nature walks and sports to creative production.

The project has reconfigured a previously fragmented office by pulling programmatic elements to the perimeter and opening up a central core. This intervention has created a dense and flexible spatial nucleus accommodating work, meetings, and events. A compact wall of small rooms has been introduced to address the increasing need for online meetings, forming a series of micro-spaces that open toward the center while offering a more protected and inward-focused working atmosphere.

In the semi-basement space, lighting has been reimagined: polycarbonate panels with integrated illumination have transformed the limited side façades into luminous surfaces, bringing depth and brightness to the interior. The central area has been transformed into an active field—stepped seating, a kitchen-bar, a curtained meeting volume, and movable tables have enabled a constantly shifting environment that supports production, interaction, and everyday life.

The project involves Piknik Works’ self-designed studio located in unit 27 of the Istanbul Design Museum. Situated within the row shops constructed alongside Mimar Sinan’s masterpiece, the Süleymaniye Külliyesi, the space establishes a direct dialogue with the site’s historical memory of production and craftsmanship. Occupying a compact 20 m² footprint, the studio is organized as a three-level configuration, generating distinct working environments. The lower level accommodates an archive, material library, and model workshop; the ground level serves as a workspace and meeting area; while the mezzanine provides a more focused and quiet production environment.

The project aims to make the everyday processes of production and the design approach visible. Models, tools, sketches, meetings, and the daily practices of the Piknik team are exposed toward the street, transforming the studio into a museum-like inventory and a public display. Walls and ceilings are articulated through a wooden grid system that reflects Piknik’s interplay of order and chaos, while providing a flexible and systematic framework for storage and display. A part of the Piknik Works team actively worked in this space for two years; today, the studio is being reconfigured to host new exhibitions and public production processes.

Performative Drawing is an ongoing research and production series by Piknik Works that brings together drawing, body, and space as a performative act. The project explores drawing not as representation, but as an activating force—capable of transforming spatial perception, intensifying creative processes, and revealing the tacit relationship between physical action, mental states, and environment.

The first iteration, Performative Drawing #1 – Swedish Chapel in Istanbul, took place within a hidden chapel inside the Swedish Consulate, near the dense urban flow of İstiklal Avenue. Over a continuous 72-hour period, the artists lived inside the space and covered all interior surfaces through uninterrupted drawing. Produced without prior planning, the work unfolded as a contemporary fresco—layering references from cave paintings to art history, alongside fragments of contemporary culture shaped by digital life, social media, and technological transformation. The process itself became as significant as the result, turning drawing into a durational, bodily, and spatial performance.

The second iteration, Performative Drawing #2 – Living Ground Floors, continued this exploration in Stockholm, focusing on the relationship between everyday life and ground-level urban spaces. Through continuous drawing, the space was gradually filled with narratives emerging from daily routines, conversations, and observations—extending the idea of drawing as a living and evolving storytelling medium. As an ongoing framework, the project has expanded into different contexts and formats. In Performative Drawing #4 – Piknik Salon, realized at Jerusalem Design Week 2022, a dining room was used as a performative setup. Beginning from a fully white space, the team transformed the environment over seven days through drawings, texts, and interactions—developing a spontaneous narrative shaped by visitors, discussions, and the immediacy of the moment.Across all iterations, Performative Drawing positions space itself as a canvas and drawing as a time-based action. Referencing a long lineage from cave walls to religious interiors, the project revisits the storytelling potential of space—questioning its diminished role in contemporary environments. Neither permanent nor predetermined, the work embraces spontaneity, temporality, and the energy of the ordinary, proposing an alternative mode of spatial production between art and architecture while transforming into an play-act that feeds and exhibits Piknik's design practice.
